Sidewall MAX Is Not Your Target Pressure
Why the sidewall maximum is a pressure limit rather than a target, and how to choose a working bicycle tyre pressure.
The MAX pressure printed on a bicycle tyre sidewall is a limit, not an instruction to inflate every tyre to that number. Your working pressure must also suit the rim, tyre setup, load and riding conditions. The CYCLAMI A2S can stop automatically at a pressure you preset, but it cannot decide whether that pressure is appropriate. Its 100 PSI factory default and 120 PSI maximum are pump settings and capabilities, not recommended pressures for your bike.
Four numbers that riders should not confuse
Pressure labels can look similar while answering very different questions. Before inflating a road, commuter, gravel or mountain-bike tyre, separate these four figures:

This distinction matters because an automatic pump follows the target entered by the user. Auto-stop helps avoid overshooting that preset, but it does not identify the tyre, read the rim specification or assess the condition of either component.
Why the sidewall maximum is not a riding target
A bicycle wheel is a system: the tyre sits on a particular rim, may use an inner tube or a tubeless setup, and carries a rider, bicycle and luggage. The word MAX means do not exceed the tyre limit under the manufacturer’s conditions. It does not promise that the tyre will ride best at that pressure. An unsupported low pressure can also create handling or tyre-retention risks.
Use guidance for the exact tyre and rim rather than habit. If a manufacturer provides a pressure chart or calculator, use the version covering your model, fitted tyre width and system weight. If the information conflicts, or the combination is not listed as compatible, ask the wheel, rim or tyre manufacturer instead of guessing.
A safe pressure-setting decision process
- Identify the components. Read the tyre size and model. Check the rim or wheel model, fitted tyre width and whether the setup uses a tube or is approved for tubeless use.
- Inspect before inflating. Do not inflate exposed casing, a damaged bead, a displaced tube or a visibly damaged rim. Correct the fault or ask a qualified cycle mechanic.
- Read both instructions. Find the tyre pressure information and the rim manufacturer’s limits, compatibility requirements and tyre-width conditions.
- Choose a supported target. Use the relevant manufacturer chart or calculator, accounting for system weight, luggage and surface. Do not reuse a figure from a different bicycle without checking.
- Confirm the unit. The A2S can display PSI or BAR. Check the unit shown before changing the preset. Never copy a BAR number into a PSI setting, or a PSI number into BAR.
- Replace the 100 PSI default. Enter your supported target. Do not choose 120 PSI simply because the pump can reach it.
- Connect the correct fitting. The A2S supports Presta and Schrader valves through its supplied fittings. Make a straight, secure connection.
- Inflate and observe. Stay with the bicycle while auto-stop works. Stop manually if the bead looks uneven, the valve shifts or anything appears wrong.
- Check the result. Confirm that the tyre is seated evenly and the valve is straight before riding.
Rim limits and hookless setups need separate attention
Some rim manufacturers publish different maximum pressures for different fitted tyre widths. They may also maintain approved-tyre lists or specify tube, tubeless or bead-type requirements.
This is especially important with hookless rims, but “hookless” alone is not enough information to calculate a pressure. Requirements vary by the actual rim and tyre combination. Check the current instructions from both manufacturers and follow the more restrictive applicable limit. If either manufacturer does not approve the combination, selecting a lower pressure does not make an incompatible setup approved.
A general online chart, forum comment or another rider’s setting cannot replace the documentation for your wheel. A cycle workshop can help identify an unmarked rim or confirm suitability.
How the A2S pressure controls fit into the process
The CYCLAMI A2S has a digital PSI/BAR display, adjustable preset and automatic stop. These features are useful after you have established a supported target.
The pump turns on with a factory default of 100 PSI, which must be changed when it is not the correct setting for your tyre. Its 120 PSI maximum describes the upper end of the device’s pressure capability. It does not mean every compatible bicycle tyre should be inflated anywhere near 120 PSI. For inflation above 100 PSI, the product instructions recommend using the supplied extension hose.
Think of auto-stop as execution, not judgement. The rider remains responsible for the unit, limits, compatibility and tyre condition.
Common pressure-setting mistakes
- Inflating to the largest visible number. A large MAX figure on the sidewall or 120 PSI on the pump is not a target.
- Leaving the factory preset unchanged. The A2S default of 100 PSI is adjustable and may be inappropriate for the fitted tyre and rim.
- Checking the tyre but not the wheel. Rim limits and compatibility requirements still apply.
- Mixing PSI and BAR. Always read the unit indicator before entering a value. Do not rely on the digits alone.
- Copying another rider. Their tyre, rim, load and conditions may differ.
- Assuming auto-stop verifies safety. The pump cannot detect an incompatible tyre-rim pairing or a damaged bead.
- Changing pressure to hide a mechanical problem. Repeated pressure loss, bead movement or casing damage needs diagnosis, not a higher preset.
Where this guidance stops
This article does not provide a universal PSI recommendation. The correct target depends on verified instructions and the complete setup. Ask the relevant manufacturer or a qualified cycle mechanic when specifications are missing, contradictory or unclear.
Do not inflate a visibly damaged tyre or rim. Stop if the bead is uneven, the tube pushes beneath it, or inflation produces unusual movement or noise. After changing a tyre, tube, rim tape or valve, recheck the setup instead of assuming the old preset still applies.
